Office of the Bishop Ordinary

St. Scholastica

To the Clergy and Laity of the Parishes of the Diocese of the Atlantic States:

Greetings in the Name of Our Risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! I trust and hope everyone had a blessed Christmas, a good start to the New Year, and is in the midst of a blessed Gesimatide.

As the new year begins, our minds turn toward the business of the Diocese and our Annual Diocesan Synod. Pursuant to Diocesan Canon 2.02, I am calling for the convening of the Seventh Annual Diocesan Synod of the Diocese of the Atlantic States to be held at the Waterfront Inn at the Villages, 1105 Lakeshore Drive, The Villages, Florida 32162. and St. Alban’s Anglican Church, 625 West Lady Lake Blvd., Lady Lake, Florida 32159, from the afternoon of Tuesday, May 15th through the afternoon of Friday, May 18th, in the year of our Lord, 2018.

St. Alban’s is a jewel of a Parish, along with her people. The Parish is named after St. Alban, the proto-martyr of England and has had a rather tumultuous history due to the death of its first Priest, The Rev. Dr. John Hale, who dedicated his life’s work to St. Alban’s. Before he died, Dr. Hale brought St. Alban’s into the Diocese and the APCK under The Rt. Rev. Dr. William C. Wiygul. Through the oversight and capable leadership of her Priest-in-Charge, The Rev. Fr. Gregory L. Koon; the Vestry; and through sacrificial giving by all of her parishioners, St. Alban’s built a building in which to worship and has now grown and reached critical mass in order to be able to host this year’s Synod. I encourage all of you to come to Synod and see what faith, courage, leadership, and the power of the Holy Ghost can do, as all of us remain faithful to the Gospel.

I have appointed Dr. John F. Schneider to the post of Annual Diocesan Synod Registrar and we will, once again, be securing our registrations for the Diocesan Synod on-line; where you will also be able to select your meal choices and other necessaries for Synod like last year. Further information about Synod Registration will be forth-coming via email under separate cover.

We have secured lodging for all Synod Delegates and Guests at the Waterfront Inn as noted above. We have also included a flyer with this email which has all the pertinent information regarding rooms, phone numbers, and shuttle service from the Orlando Airport. Please study it carefully and make your room reservations before April 15th, 2018! The Waterfront has given us a very good room rate, so I hope many of you will attend this year’s Synod.

To the end that expenses are always on everyone’s minds, I understand attendance at Synod involves personal effort, sacrifice, and expense. I am asking, wherever possible, that our Parishes assist their Clergy, Lay Delegates, and other Diocesan personnel with their expenses to attend Annual Diocesan Synod. It is always important that we gather to attend to the business of our Diocese. It takes all of us.

Archbishop Morse’s courage, faithfulness, and dedication led us forth from the fleshpots of Egypt and into the wilderness towards freedom, peace, and salvation that only God can give. In this, the fortieth year of those beginnings, we continue in the second generation of that pilgrimage. It is up to us to continue the legacy he began, remain faithful to Our Blessed Lord, and press on God’s Kingdom!

For the Love of God and the sake of the Gospel, I remain,

Yours faithfully in Our Blessed Lord,

+The Rt. Rev. John E. Upham, Jr.
